St Martin of Tours was a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and became a monk. November 11th is St Martin's Day in Germany. In the evening children go through the streets with paper lanterns and candles, and sing songs about St. Martin. Sometimes, a man dressed as St. Martin rides on a horse in front of the procession. In Bischofsheim nursery school children have made their paper lanterns and then gone on a hunt for their Father Christmas 'Nikolaus'. Our picture shows they have found him by a camp fire. A surprise is in store for each of them.
